Mustang Lo-Manthang Trek

In the early 7th century the land of Upper Mustang mainly Lo Tshu Dhyun was highly influenced by Lasha of Tibet. The land was granted to retainer of the Ghunthang King of western Tibet. In late 1300's a warrior Ampel (first king of Mustang) from Tibet defeated the local warlord's to unite the kingdom and established his capital at Lomanthang.

The Kingdom of Lo-manthang or Mustang situated at al altitude of 3,770m is an independent kingdom having allegiance with the democratic republic of Nepal. Though the people call themselves Lobas- people from Lo, they are very much Tibetan and practice a sophisticated culture and economy. The King's palace is an imposing 4 – storey building in the center of the walled city. It is the home of the present king - Jigme Parbal Bista. The Honorary title "Bist – a high caste title in Nepali" was conferred by the King of Nepal. Though his duties are largely ceremonial, he is respected by the people and consulted about many issues by villagers throughout Lo Despite the apparent squalors of Lo Manthang, the city is prosperous and maintains a strong sense of community.

This is a restricted area and only recently been opened to tourism. However, only 5000 tourists per year are allowed to visit this enchanting kingdom and is on a first come first serve basis. The rule applies that every trek group must be accompanied by a Government liaison officer from His Majesty's Government of Nepal and every visitor has to pay a restricted area entrance fee of US$ 700.00 per person which is valid for 10 days from the date of entry and if clients want to visit other areas north of Lo-manthang such as the Garphu, Nyaphu and Chosar Gompas, then an additional US$ 210.00 per person is levied.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive Kathmandu. Overnight at hotel.
Day 02: Sightseeing in Kathmandu. Overnight at hotel.
Day 03: Fly to Pokhara & Sightseeing. Overnight at hotel.
Day 04: Pokhara to Jomsom by flight and trek to Kagbeni. Trek duration: 3 ½ hrs. Overnight at lodge/camp.
Day 05: Trek to Chele Village. Trek duration: 5 ½ hrs. Overnight at lodge/camp.
Day 06: Trek to Syangmochen (3,710m). Trek duration: 6 hrs. Overnight at lodge/camp.
Day 07: Trek to Tsarang (3,520m). Trek duration: 6 ½ hrs. Overnight at lodge/camp.
Day 08: Trek to Lo-Manthang (3,780m). Trek duration: 5 ½ hrs. Overnight at lodge/camp.
Day 09: Sightseeing around Lo-Manthang. Trek duration: 3 ½ - 4 ½ hrs. Overnight at lodge/camp.
Day 10: Trek to Ghami (3,440m). Trek duration: 6 hrs. Overnight at lodge/camp.
Day 11: Trek to Samar. Trek duration: 6 ½ hrs. Overnight at lodge/camp.
Day 12: Trek to Tangbe. Trek duration: 6 ½ hrs. Overnight at lodge/camp.
Day 13: Trek to Kagbeni and drive to Jomsom. Trek duration: 4 ½ hrs. Drive duration: 2 hrs. In the evening a farewell dinner will be organized for the group by the staff. Overnight at lodge.
Day 14: Jomsom to Pokhara to Kathmandu by flight. Flight duration: 55 minutes. Overnight at hotel.
Day 15: Final departure.
